3 Ways Inflammation Is Connected To Allergies

Inflammation is a defense mechanism of the body. It is how the body deals with internal and external triggers. Some triggers are bacteria, viruses, dust, stress, certain foods, etc. We need inflammation to some degree for day to day survival.  Inflammation becomes a problem for us when we are continually having an inflammation response.

When we clean out a room and stir up a lot of dust we start sneezing. It's good to sneeze that dust out. It becomes a problem when we are so sensitive that we can't walk into a room without sneezing.

There are many reason why we might have a continuous inflammation response. Some of the ways this can happen are:

  • 1. We are being continually exposed to the offending trigger. If we have a pet we have an allergy to we have an inflammation response every time we're with them.

  • 2. Our body has gotten stuck in an inflammation cycle. Say we have several weeks of stress, we break out with some eczema. Our stress level goes down, but we've still got the eczema. Our body has gotten stuck in that inflammation cycle in the form of eczema.

  • 3. Exposure to several different inflammation triggers can overwhelm our body. We might have a pet or two, lots of dust in the house, lots of pollen in the air, AND we're having a really stressful month. This might show up as allergy symptoms when we have rarely had allergies in the past.

What are some general things we can do to keep our inflammation response from becoming a problem? Things I recommend to my patients include:

  • If you have a pet try to keep them out of your room at night

  • Get an air filter for your bedroom

  • Change your pillowcase every day

  • Keep dust to a minimum in your house

  • Try to reduce your stress through committing to less stuff for a while and/or getting a little more sleep.

  • Limit or avoid foods you feel increase your allergy symptoms

  • Increase your intake of fresh veggies and fruits

  • Eat meals regularly
